Something not working?

Email support@dnsbutton.dev. A real person reads it. There is no ticket system, no login and no chatbot.

What to include

The app ships a read-only diagnostic that answers most of what would otherwise be a dozen questions. It changes nothing and touches no network unless you ask it to:

./doctor.sh

Paste its output into the email. It reports the resolvers currently in effect, which network service the app would configure and why, the state of the provider catalogue, and live response times. Otherwise, the three things that help most are your macOS version, the DNS Button version from About DNS Button, and what you expected to happen instead.

Things that are usually not bugs

The menu says a provider I did not pick

That is the app working. It reads your Mac's DNS back from the system every time the menu opens rather than repeating what it last wrote, so if a VPN, a configuration profile or another app has taken over, the menu says so instead of pretending. If the resolvers are not ones it recognises, it says Unrecognised rather than guessing a plausible name.

The switch at the top is greyed out

There is nothing for it to turn on yet — no resolver from this app is running and none has been used before. Pick a provider from the list and it becomes available.

A resolver shows no time, or times out

Some networks block DNS to anything but their own resolver, and some resolvers do not answer from every country. A timeout is a real result about your network, not a failure of the test.

Flushing the cache asks for my password

Only the macOS DNS responder can empty the cache, and signalling it requires administrator rights. That is why flushing is a separate command rather than something done automatically on every switch. It is usually unnecessary — macOS reloads its resolver when the servers change.

Reporting a security issue

Email the same address with security in the subject. Please do not open a public post first. We will confirm receipt, tell you what we find, and credit you if you would like to be credited.

Refunds

Purchases go through Apple, so refunds do too — Apple handles them and we are not able to issue one directly. Use reportaproblem.apple.com. If something is broken, tell us anyway; we would rather fix it.
